Lorado is Magic in the Weird West, inspired by American mythology. It is a world of enchanted six-shooters, aven medicine men, and hungry dire jackalopes. Lorado is inspired by many sources of American folklore, including urban legend, lumberjack lore, Amerindian storytelling, Louisiana voodoo, the Wizard of Oz, Mexican folklore and African-American folk tales.
My goal for Lorado is to make a fun limited environment to play with friends and at conventions. A self-contained toy. If people have fun playing with it, that's all that matters. Goal #1 is fun, goal #2 is flavor.
Warband is the main mechanic for the native tribes. A creature with warband attacks, then gets to share an ability with another attacker, much like Soulbond. Warband: Whenever this creature attacks, you may pair it with another unpaired attacking creature until end of turn. As long as this creature is paired with another creature, both creatures have... Warband appears mostly in red and green.
Reflex is the "quickdraw" gunslinger mechanic and appears mostly on sorceries. A sorcery with reflex can be cast at instant speed for extra mana. Reflex appears mostly in blue and red.
Renown from Magic Origins returns in white and black, representing the heroes and villains of the old west.
Straight is styled after the type of poker hand. Count the longest string of sequential CMC's on your board, get an effect of that size. It functions much like devotion in practice. It appears mostly in red, blue, and black.
Firearms are equipment cards that enter the battlefield with charge counters. Charge counters are consumed for some positive effect. Guns cannot reload themselves, but there are supporting cards at uncommon and rare that put charge counters back on guns. Half the fun is the tension of running out of ammo!
I'm aware of WoTC's stance about guns in MTG. I have chosen to put them in my own set anyway, I don't have to obey that policy. Deadlands and Iron Kingdoms get by just fine with firearms in their fantasy. All firearms in Lorado are magical items that swirl with runes, fire lightning bolts, or glow with arcane energy.
Changed Briar Rabbit to use "You May"
All punctuation removed from all card names in XML to minimise any kinds of punctuation conflict with cockatrice, planesculptors, and ASCII encoding.
